Montreal’s Approach to Terrorism

An interesting day in Montreal for those following the ‘war on terror’. Firstly, Trudeau airport was closed for a number of hours because someone ‘accidentally’ snuck a knife past security. This caused hours of delays for everyone as the airport was closed down and the guy eventually found – he said he hadn’t realised that the multi-tool he was carrying was prohibited.

Then late last evening, a man outside of the American Embassy threatened to detonate a bomb in his backpack. This explained why on the way back from our curry last night we saw a pile of police cars screaming along, as opposed to the couple of cops in the curry house posing for photos with the hen parties. What’s interesting to me is that the guy eventually put his backpack down and surrendered, where it turns out there was no bomb. The guy was charged with disturbing the peace. One suspects that in America he’d have been shot, or at the very least would be on his way to Cuba by now.

Today’s Horoscope: Communication is Less Blocked

Well after almost a full day of no Skype, the wonder peer to peer telephone app, after their mysterious unexplained outage it looks like most people can now log on again. It’s slow to sign on right now though and it’s not letting me make some profile changes, so guess not all is good in the woods. However this whole event means we now know more about the Skype ‘heartbeat’ page.

In most likely unrelated news, my website host is having their own issues, so at the moment Matt Hobbs is fine (ie, here) but is Useful is unavailable. They claim it will be back up soon, but it’s already been down since 9pm last night so that’s now 12 hours.

Hmm… maybe the whole internet just has a 12 hour cold or something. Makes you appreciate the value of a good sysadmin person!

Stardust – An Epic Gaiman Movie

Last night we went to see Stardust, the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman & Charles Vess’ same titled graphic novel. Gaiman’s last foray into movies, MirrorMask, was interesting but somehow un-engaging, but Stardust is an absolute delight all the way through. A fairy-tale love story, set in a world alongside England – reached through a hole in the wall next to the town of Wall (near Ipswich). Once the protagonist, Tristran Thorne, sets off on his quest to find a fallen star the action comes thick and fast, with twists and amazing characters on the way that keep you constantly engaged and smiling.

My personal highlights are the ghostly chorus of the dead princes, all named based on their order of birth, from Primus to Septimus, and all vying to be the next king by dint of being the last one alive. The already dead brothers includes David Walliams and Rupert Everett, and en masse they inject a wonderful note of humour into a Shakespearean tradition. The special effects are also fully integrated, never too showy just there in subserviance to the story as they should. Plus you have Robert deNiro as a flying ship captain with a hidden secret, Ricky Gervais with a brief cameo as a salesman plus a panoply of other famous actors from both sides of the pond – thankfully a lot are British given that’s the general accent. Even Claire Danes’ accent is reasonable, if a little too plumy in places.

You know this movie would never have gotten made were it for the success of Harry Potter, so for that we owe J K Rowling another thanks. Gaiman is an amazing author and explorer of the imagination, but his popular success is still limited even after the oustanding Sandman graphic novels and a selection of successful novels. Indeed, rumours of Sandman’s movie debut have been around for many years now, but it has yet to appear. Fingers crossed that Stardust has enough box office success to put some steam behind other Gaiman adaptations. So go see it!

Purty Sky Lights This Sunday

This sunday stay up late and watch the annual Perseids Meteor Shower. It’s supposed to be best on the east coast at 2am Monday morning, or in the UK around 10pm Sunday night. Meteor showers are like uber-cool free fireworks, so get ’em while their hot!*

*Note: If a meteor does land near you then don’t touch it. It will be very hot. Actually, if a meteor lands near you then there’s a good chance you’ll be dead from the impact. So remember to duck and cover.

Today’s Guitar Song: "I’m Finding it Harder to be a Gentleman" – The White Stripes

Now that I have my strat’ & amp back in regular circulation I realised my repertoire of songs hasn’t really grown since about 10 years ago. Ug. So I’m setting myself a challenge to try and learn a new song every day (or so). Nothing too complex, but songs that I enjoy listening to and disturbing the neighbours with (sorry Jen).

Today’s song is from the lovely White Stripes, as I suspect many future songs will as well given their basis in relatively easy rock blues guitar. The song “I’m Finding It Harder, To Be A Gentleman Every Day” is off White Blood Cells, and the tab was found here. A nice easy start, six chords and a break that just involves bending a few strings. Tomorrow I might even try tuning my guitar first since the tab seemed to be one tone low.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – by J K Rowling (4/5)

Harry Potter. Well, you probably aren’t going to read this book unless you’ve read all the others – and if you’ve read all the others then you’ll read this one too. That said it is definately the best of the series, and J K Rowling has grown with each book, as have her readers. Go back and read the first and you’ll see what I mean. The Deathly Hallows ties up all the loose ends, kills off a few characters and keeps you on the edge of your seat in places. It’s well written and for a book that comes in over 700 pages it’s easy to read and finish in one sitting, just make sure you have a wrist support.

Thanks to Jess for lending this to me a few days after it was out – she, like most fans, had bought and read the book within a day. I just wonder if all the Harry fans will be suffering something akin to withdrawal soon.

Amazing Lightning Storm in New York

Lightning + Empire State Building
Originally uploaded by ultrahi.

Well I’m glad I didn’t fly anywhere tonight. The most amazing lightning storm has been raging around New York for the last two hours. It kicked off in Jersey and just passed into Brooklyn about 45 minutes ago bringing torrential rain with it. Luckily I’d just bought my bike back in.
And the other good news is that it’s really taken the edge off the heat. That and I didn’t go on my roof to take pictures this time… probably would have been a good idea.
