Yeah, I’m on the plane.. ON. THE. PLANE!

There is some movement across the EU to allow in-flight calls from mobile phones. At the moment this discussion is in its early stages, as all the national air regulators need to approve it, but the very fact that it is even being discussed seriously worries the hell out of me.

Even ignoring the possibility of remote triggering of terrorist devices, my vote is firmly against allowing in-flight mobile phone calls purely for social reasons. Smoking, that most anti-social of social behaviours, has already been banned on the grounds of safety but people of my age may well remember the frustration of being on a long haul journey when smoking was allowed. So instead of that pervasive stench, imagine the constant nattering of people on seats all around you loudly talking into their phones, or the beeping of text messages arriving. Argh! It’s already making me feel tense and I’m on the ground right now. Innovation in communication is a wonderful thing, but sometimes common and social sense should win out.

Deadly Virus in US

An English man fishing on holiday in New Hampshire has contracted a rare and highly fatal disease. Triple E, which stands for ‘Eastern Equine Encephalitis’, is transmitted by mosquito bites and has killed an average of 5 people a year for the last 40 years. There is no known cure, and a third of victims die, with 50% of the survivors seriously mentally disabled.

How come I never heard about this from any US news station? Every year of living in New York I’d hear about the less fatal West Nile virus from mosquitoes, but never this one. I guess statistically it’s pretty rare, but it makes me nervous as I contemplate an early evening run along the highly mosquito’d Lachine Canal…

In Rainbows We Trust

Radiohead’s new album ‘In Rainbows‘ is due out soon – 10th October to be precise. What’s especially interesting about this album is that Radiohead are asking us what we want to pay for it – no, really.

Whatever happens this will certainly be an interesting experiment. Radiohead are, I suspect, getting paid directly for all the money paid for the download as they recently completed their contractual obligations to EMI with their wonderful last album ‘Hail to the Thief’. They could be the first of many of the major bands to reject the record company middle men and work directly with fans, something normally the domain of the startup bands on mySpace.

Happy Birthday Google!

Today is Google’s 9th birthday – hence the natty pinata design they have on their home page. In some ways it surprises me that they’re that old, and then it feels like I can’t remember what life was like without being able to ‘Google’ anything. I’m sure even Larry & Sergey didn’t envision that it would turn out like this. Here’s to another interesting nine years…

The Brothers’ Gonna Work It Out

Last night the Chemical Brothers played McCarren Pool, and since the torrential rain had stopped I wandered down to check them out. After a brief circuit outside I found a great place to watch from the kiddies playground, where the sound was amazing and I could see everything from standing atop a small wall. Splendid! They played all the classics, old and new, and had some great visuals going on behind them as always. Haven’t seen them play since Glastonbury many years ago, so it was great to get a chance to dance to them outside again. Thanks brothers!

Oh, and not only did the Chemical Brothers come to play in the ‘hood – but apparently the Vice President of Poland came to visit Greenpoint. The local church was cordoned off and surrounded by adoring throngs of local Poles which was highly surreal indeed.

The Monty Python Appreciation Society

Many years ago back at school I founded ‘The Monty Python Appreciation Society’, which impressive as it sounds was in fact just an excuse for a gang of us to borrow the school video and watch episodes of Python at lunchtimes. Ah, the joys of being a geek. To be fair we had more reason than many people, as Terry Jones used to be Head Boy at our school, so there was a tenuous link which was exploited to full, lazy effect.

Now thanks to my birthday present from mum I get to relive those school highlights, since I now have the complete box set of Monty Python to enjoy. Amazingly, aside from a few sketches, it stands the test of time admirably and still makes me laugh out loud. Plus there are the quotes. Mmmm… quoteage.

To sleep, perchance parler Français

I guess I’ve been in Montréal a while now… I woke up this morning in the middle of a weird dream in which everyone was speaking French, including me. So when I tried to remember what the dream was actually about – something to do with baby rabbits – I had no idea what anyone in the dream had said… Zut alors.

All of that is pretty encouraging, but don’t expect my blog to suddenly become bi-lingual! If you want to read it in French please feel free to chuck it into Babel Fish or some other online translation engine.

The reason for this sudden influx of french-osity (and rabbits) to my dreams was most likely from spending most of yesterday taking photos for Chocolat in Outremont, the French quarter of Montréal. The owners of the stores I had to take photos of generally didn’t speak English, so for once I was forced to chat away in ‘French’ – or Franglais more like. All in all a fun day, as Outremont is a lovely area, it was beautifully sunny day and I got to eat a lovely lunch of sardines on thin pizza. Mmmm, fishy.

Today I’m still suffering from my photographic wanderings, combined with a solid three day weekend spent labouring over a hot paint roller. The kitchen, hall and bathroom are now looking much more together, barring a few last details. The doors are white for the first time in years, with no grubby hand marks or worn paint – and that in itself is something of a miracle. The other miracle being the discovery of the missing bathroom extractor fan… not sure how one can loose such a thing, but apparently you can.

Sleepy. So sleepy.

Right now I’m about ready to keel over… At some point soon I’ll reveal all as to why this is, but suffice it to say that it’s a ‘three buses come along at the same time’ type scenario.

On the plus side so much has been done my whole self is glowing with completion endorphins.

More blogging when my fingers recover from typing. Nighty night.
